Wednesday, February 23: Garden Planning Meeting

19 Feb

Please join us for our monthly Garden Planning Meeting this Wednesday, February 23, 6:30 – 8:00 pm at Terrazas Library.  The library is at 1105 East Cesar Chavez (just west of Waller Street).

This meeting will include a special leadership training, so it’s a must for all committee and project leaders, all members of committees and work teams, all planning team members, and anyone who wants to have a role in helping us build our garden and create our community.  We are learning that the work we have to do requires leadership on the part of everyone.  Ours is not the type of organization where a few people at the top do all the directing.  We count on everyone to take part in the decisions and take their turn to initiate activities and lead work projects.  This training will give us an opportunity to learn some tools for effective leadership and share our ideas and strategies for making meetings fun and productive.

The agenda will also include reports from each of the current work projects, followed by discussion and input from the group.  We will also have discussion about the Grand Opening Celebration, which will take place in May.

Sunday, October 17: Happy Hour and Mini-Workday

26 Oct

Thanks to the wonderful group who came out on Sunday afternoon (Oct 17th) from 5-7pm for the “Happy Hour and Mini-Workday” to socialize a bit and start preparing/planting the Community Plot.

John Brewington led a jolly group of 20+ gardeners and we got about 1/3 of the work done. We planted rows and rows of mustard green and broccoli plant starts donated by Marian Stasney and we have plans to add much more in the coming days/weeks.

It was a lot of fun to be PLANTING together, so watch your email for the announcement of our next “Happy Hour + Mini-Workday.”

Saturday, July 10: Monthly Workday

9 Jul

Dear Festival Beach Garden Helpers:

Just a reminder to everyone that our monthly workday is this Saturday, July 10th from 9:00-noon.

Remember that work in community areas is part of each gardener’s contract to keep the garden running smoothly. Please come tomorrow morning to do your work hours, if possible, because we have organized leaders and made special extra equipment available to make the communal efforts go more smoothly.

If you cannot come tomorrow morning, you have until the end of July to complete your two hours of community work, and you can check the Work Hours Notebook in the green tool shed to find out what needs to be done and record your hours worked.

Below are the tasks we are going to try to accomplish tomorrow morning:

1. MULCHING: Moving of mulch and commercial compost to needed areas.
Mulch two smaller pecan trees.

2. CLEAN UP UNSIGHTLY AREAS: Clean up northeast corner of garden.
Detritus from points unknown. Move reusable parts and pieces to more
organized space. Gather buried hoses and determine if repairable. Move
and stack components for kiosk.

3. BUILD CENTRAL GARDEN PATH: Ongoing work on central garden path to
front main pedestrian gate and truck path.

4. COMPOST PILES: Move compost piles and move leaves from drainage
area near phase 3 to compost.

5. SIGN MAKING: Use pieces of plywood and paint to make some more
informational signs in the garden.

6. LAWN MOWING – We have 2 hand mowers and one riding mower and plenty
of lawn.

Please bring your own work gloves and if you have some sign-making
materials you would like to donate, please bring those as well.

John Brewington is leading the workday this week- if you need to
contact him before Saturday morning with questions, please email:
jbrewington@austin.rr.com

See you there!
